My dear Sir,
In reply to your
letter of Friday last, I have great pleasure in stating that when I met you at the Governor's dinner, I did not observe anything in your manner or conduct which led me to suppose you were at all intoxicated.
With reference to certain unseemly assertions at Mr. Woodgate's table, I make a rule never to repeat idle conversation which can do mischief or involve myself in other people's quarrels.
